I sing in a band called 'Halcyon' and designed our band logo based on the bird. Looking further into its meaning, I decided to sculpt this, hopefully beautiful, detailed relief plaque to add to my range.
I really enjoyed sculpting all the detail (which was done with a 'needle-like' sculpting tool), and I also really enjoy the process from creating the original design through to boxing the finished piece!

This is my interpretation of 'Halcyon Days'. Originating from Greek legend, the 'Halcyon' was a kingfisher-like sea bird believed to have the power to calm the seas for two weeks around the winter solstice, so that it could safely make a nest and hatch its young. Over the centuries the meaning has changed somewhat, so that now 'Halcyon Days' are associated with a nostalgic view of long warm summers gone by.
I sculpted this circular relief wall plaque in wax, which you can see in one of the images, and after moulding, I then produced it in cold-cast pewter, bronze and copper in my coal shed!
Once the plaque has been cast, it is then sanded, rubbed with wire wool, polished, waxed and then mounted on a ceramic wall tile and gift boxed. The finished wall plaque measures approximately 13 cm x 13 cm and it has a small brass hook on the reverse for hanging. The back is also finished in felt fablon.
The plaque is presented in a black gift box, which I hand decorate with lilac paper raffia, and there is also an information card and gift tag provided.
It is often difficult to buy gifts for men, but this is made in 'manly' metal and has a fishing theme! I can also make the gift box less 'girly' if you'd like, by adding metallic ribbon in place of the lilac...just ask when you order!
I also produce this design with a turquoise wash in the detail (I've listed each finish separately)
