Come and learn how to make lots of different types of traditional (and not so traditional) Dorset Buttons.
There will be four separate sessions taking place on Monday mornings from 09.15 - 11.15 at the Artisan Craft Workshop, at Elworthy Hall, Winterborne Monkton near Dorchester, DT2 9PT. A convenient but peaceful location and refreshments provided.
Session 1 - Basic Cross Wheels on Monday 6th.
This will introduce you to the technique of creating the most popular of the traditional Dorset Buttons and provide you with some of the history behind them as well.
Session 2 - Bumps and Beads on Monday 13th.
This session builds on the last and shows you how to create more complex designs, how to incorporate beads and how to work the characteristic ridge patterns.
Session 3 - Bird's Eyes (Two ways) on Monday 20th.
This time we will tackle the bird's eye style of button, firstly working with wool to practise the technique and then moving on to a fabric mould and working in fine cotton. If there is time we may squeeze in a Yorkshire button too.
Session 4 Singelton's. Grindles and Knobs on Monday 27th.
In this last session we will tackle the remaining moulded buttons worked in fabric and cotton.
Please bring with you a small pair of sharp scissors and a small sewing kit comprising a selection of needles (blunt tapestry and sharps too), but do not worry if unsure as all materials will be provided.
Also you will be given a fact file that has lots of tips and illustrations.
