"First they ignore you. Then they ridicule you. Then they fight you. Then you win." Mahatma Ghandi. This so accurately describes the situation in Scotland at the moment. being a pro-independence artist I wanted to do a piece that was inspired by the independence referendum.

The Lewis Chessmen, or Uig Chessmen, named after the beach where they were found, are a group of 78 12th-century chess pieces, most of which are carved in walrus ivory. Discovered in 1831 on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, they may constitute some of the few complete, surviving medieval chess sets. They are owned and exhibited by the British Museum in London, which has 67 of the original pieces, and the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh, which has 11 pieces.

I like the idea of the chessmen coming to life to chant Ghandi's message at a time when change is upon us.
