Mrs. Tree Gems was looking for something in her sewing box this morning and it gave me a brainwave when I saw some of her ‘vintage’ wooden bobbins of cotton. So, this afternoon, after a great deal of calculation and trial and error (and some more error), I came up with this little beauty.
The reel is a little bigger than a normal reel of cotton, but that’s dictated by the ‘gubbins’ inside. The bobbin measures about 1 5/8” (40mm) diameter x 2 ¼” (55mm) high.
Pull the end of the bobbin, and hidden within is a 1GB memory stick, jump drive, flash drive or memory key. (They have so many possible names!).
I have photographed the bobbin with loose Dewhirst’s Sylko labels but I'm now sending bobbins out with a special Tree Gems label.
I'm told 1 GB will accept anything between 250 and 1000 photographs depending on quality settings. Or 250 MP3s at 128 kB/s.
Seems like a great gift for a needleworker, seamstress, dressmaker, milliner, cross-stitcher, or even a bobbin collector - no doubt someone collects them!
Like some of my other memory sticks, this one is a bit bigger than the mass-produced plastic devices and so may foul on the ‘bodywork of some computers. However, short extension leads are available - I got mine from a ‘Pound Shop’
