Description

I was delighted to discover that the nickname for these happy little hounds is the “Merry Cocker”
With their soulful eyes it’s easy to see where the phrase “spaniel eyes” (as in “Don’t look at me with those spaniel eyes!”) came from.

The spaniel is widely assumed to have originated in Spain, with the word “spaniel” thought to be derived from the old French word “Espaignol” meaning “Spanish”. It may have been the Romans who were responsible for bringing these ‘Dogs of Spain’ to other parts of Europe.

I was interested to discover how closely Cockers and Springers are related. Originally these were just different names given to pups of the same litter — the smaller ones called Cockers and the larger ones, Springers.

Immortalised as Lady (in the 1955 film Lady and the Tramp) Cocker Spaniels are no strangers to celebrity status. Famous owners include George Clooney, The Kennedy family, Oprah Winfrey, President Nixon, Elton John and Prince William.

Printed by hand on my press in a soft sage green ink, each one is individually signed.
Paper Size 305 x 305mm

Inspiration

These prints combine hand drawn lettering with illustration. I was inspired to tell the story of different dog breeds using a dog tag design. I am fascinated by the history and unique characteristics that define particular breeds and I wanted to celebrate that uniqueness by creating dog breed specific prints.

The dog tag idea came from thoughts about the plight of dogs in rescue centres and shelters. I imagined that they might be wearing a dog tag that helped prospective owners find out more about the dog in the hope that they might be rescued and given a ‘forever home’. There’s a bit of the children’s character Paddington Bear in this project too - the lost bear with a luggage label attached - entreating its finder to 'look after this bear'.
