If a fallen tree is allowed to remain in woodland for a period of time, Mother Nature sometimes moves in to draw wonderful patterns in the dying wood. There's an element of luck in catching the log before in starts to rot. But when you do time it right, the effect can be stunning.

This memory stick / jump drive / flash drive / memory key or whatever else you call them (!) is made from a piece of beech that has been affected like that. Spalting is the name of the effect. The markings have the look of a hand-drawn treasure map! I have shaped the memory stick to something resembling a pebble and it's really 'feely'.

I do favour a finish that allows the ‘woodiness’ of the material to show through rather than a glossy varnish and most of what I have on sale feature an oil and hard wax finish.

Superstitious?

…then with a wooden memory stick, you can always ‘Touch Wood’!

Technical gubbins: This memory stick has 2 Gigabytes of memory. 2 GB will accept anything between 500 and 2000 photographs depending on quality settings.

Measurements are about 2 3/4" x 1 3/8" x 5/8" and it's attached to a leather thong, so could be worn as a pendant.
