I have only recently become enchanted by the possibilities that wood can offer to the world of jewellery and associated small items. Compared with making furniture and other large things, I have found that working with wood at this scale opens the eyes to a different world: the micro-beauty of wood.
I haven't worked with wood from the holly tree before, but I came across a small piece hidden in a pile of yew logs this week. The wood is a light creamy colour with some nice variations in it. I chose a small piece with a tiny branch for quirkiness.
I do favour a finish that allows the ‘woodiness’ of the material to show through rather than a glossy varnish and most of what I have on sale feature an oil and hard wax finish.
Superstitious?
…then with a wooden memory stick, you can always ‘Touch Wood’!
Not strictly jewellery I know, but this jump drive deserves to be shown off. It has 1 Gigabyte of memory. I'm told 1 GB will accept anything between 250 and 1000 photographs depending on quality settings. Or 250 MP3s at 128 kB/s.
The memory stick measures about 2.5" x 1.5" x 0.5" and is fitted with a leather thong. Be aware that the chunky nature of some of my memory sticks may not fit directly into some machines. Small extension leads are available (e.g. Pound Shops)
