When I first saw the timeless beauty of old antique sugan chairs I was totally ammazed and took an early chance to make my own versions of this.

I try to capture some of the endeavour, ingenuity and resourcefulness of the communities from this remote Celtic fringes. Times were tough in these self reliant, isolated areas. If you needed to use something you made it; using only the resources in your locality.

Many of the original chair were painted but my chairs are also available unpainted, just linseed oiled to capture the beauty of native ash timber which is used to make these chairs.

Full description

Traditional Irish sugan chairs, inspired by Celtic design.

£160 for 1 chair

£300 for a set of 2 chairs

£600 for a set of 4 chairs

The Celtic regions of the British Isles, in particular Ireland, produced some distinctive traditional furniture, including the sugan chair. Sugan is the Irish gaelic word for straw or a twisted straw rope which was used to seat the old original chairs. The structure of the sugan chair is simple yet extremely strong and robust. The square or rectangular cross section legs are drilled to accept turned on shaped rails making up the frame of the chair. The front of the chair is under the back giving the seat a trapezium shape.

Because the side rails making up the seat are higher than the front and back seat rails, the joints are much stronger and the seat much more comfortable. Please see the wedges securing the rails to the chair legs used to secure the back support to the back legs.

I have kept loyal to the original structure of the old sugan chairs, maintaining the strength, character and personality from old Irish culture to today. It is perfect for use in kitchens or dining rooms.

I can also paint the chairs any colour of your choice, just let me know when placing your order. I can also create a shabby chic effect on the chairs if you would like.
