This vase is quite small, but has great presence. It has been painstakingly crafted and fired to 1300 degrees centigrade in a saggar with wood and charcoal. The piece was first thrown as a closed form, then carefully carved to give it a natural, rock-like appearance. Glaze and clay texture were added and the surface burnished by hand. Finally, a layer of ash was added to the top which has given an extra dimension in terms of colour and texture.
The subtle colours on this vase are quite remarkable, and purely the result of interaction between the clay, ash, smoke and gases inside the saggar. It stands just over 3 inches tall and carries Mark Smalley's personal symbol impressed to the base.
Please note that this piece will not hold water so is only usable as an art object or to display dried flowers.
UK postage and packing for this item will be at a fixed cost of £2.90.
