I started making playhouses for children but the onion was designed in response to the large number of requests from adults for a den they could call their own! In fact it's equally appealling to adults and children and very popular with teenage girls. The shape is reminiscent of a seed pod but for a child it could easily be a space ship!

The 'Onion' is a private space which can be whatever you want it to be: a playhouse for the kids, a reading pod, a teenage hang-out, a sulking room, a day bed, a garden folly, a rustic hide-out to escape from modern life.

I make this in three sizes. The medium is my favourite. At about 1.25m diameter at the widest point and 1.6m tall externally, it feels just right!

They all have an integral wooden base. Apart from the base, they are constructed entirely from Somerset willow using traditional basketry techniques.

The sloping sides are comfortable to lean against. The circular shape gives a wonderful feeling of peace and safety. The curvature gives a surprising volume inside.

It can be used indoors or out. If kept indoors it will last indefinitely. If left outdoors, it will have a finite life. Annual applications of varnish or linseed oil will protect it from the weather and you could then expect to get 4-8 years use from it.
