I use a lot of garlic in my cooking and wanted somewhere airy to store it. This African plaiting technique is ideal for making a basket to hang on the wall. In Africa grasses would be used for weaving but the technique works very well with slender rods of Somerset willow.

This is a basket designed to be hung in the kitchen to store garlic bulbs. It allows air to circulate around the bulbs keeping them in top condition until you're ready to cook with them.
It could equally be used for chillies, shallots or small onions.
It's made using a plaiting technique which comes from Africa. The willow is a variety called flanders red which is a lovely orangey brown with a delicious scent. The willow is grown in Somerset and I weave the baskets myself in Farnham, Surrey.
Sizes vary slightly but they are between 25 and 30cm (10-12") tall and the diameter at the top is between 8cm and 10cm (3-4"). They have a loop for hanging also made from willow. There are no other materials or fixings used.
Makes a great Christmas present for a keen cook.
