Worker bees dance to attract the attention of other bees while collecting nectar. It usually happens after a worker bee has found an ample stock of nectar. First she collects her own load, and then she speeds home to tell the other workers where to head for. If the nectar is more than 100 metres away, the bee skips over the comb making the figure of eight, waggling her tail, which is called the ‘waggle’ dance. Her direction and the number of waggles she makes while dancing her figures of eight, shows the other bees in which direction to fly and how far. Interestingly the figure 8 on its side, ∞, symbolises infinity. Perhaps it is the infinity sign the bees are making as it is their infinitive powers, so great that we cannot begin to measure their importance, in performing the pollination of flowers, vegetables and fruit for humankind.
