Inspired by Voodoo, Mexican wrestler masks and Leigh Bowery these heads originally manifested in shrines to Papa Legba and Pomba Gira, designed for Liverpool’s Brazilica Voodoo Ball. Voodoo is one manifestation of Yoruban religion (West African). Carried across the Atlantic by Slaves and changed or hidden in numerous ways, known as Santeria, Condomble and Voodoo amongst their many names they all share archetypes and concepts. Two of the most powerful spirits are Papa Legba and Pomba Gira, husband and wife. Papa Legba is the 1st spirit encountered and he opens the doors of perception. He manifests at the crossroads and has been associated with travel and the internet, as well as the person who taught Robert Johnson the Blues (he is a trickster god, not the devil). Pomba Gira is a powerful woman, the spirit of sex and not to be treated lightly. She is full of passion and can be as angry as she is loving. Down-to-earth and honest, dispensing advice to women and revenging wrongs.

Papa Legba : Spirit of Communication, Doors and the Internet

Devised as the manifestation of trickster-god Papa Legba and goddess of sex Pomba Gira these doll heads are re-purposed from innocent if alarming-looking childs toys into strong graphic representations of Orishas – Voodoo spirits of the modern age. Made with pen and enamel and coated with thin layers of matte varnish for protection each head comes on a simple black stand – ready to be used as the powerful centrepiece of your own shrine.
