I took photos of poppies last year but had always been a little afraid to try sewing one, the petals are so thin and crinkly, rather like crushed tissue paper. I finally decided to try one when I asked for feedback on flowers people would like to see me try, the poppy came out on top. It turned out to be a very enjoyable flower to sketch and sew and I am quite pleased with the result.

Full description
This dainty necklace depicts a poppy. It is an original design hand embroidered on silk using fine continuous filament floss silk thread. It is mounted in a silver plated frame and hung on a 16" sterling silver chain. The pendant measures 18.5mm x 18.5mm.
The poppy is such an evocative flower, it can be seen in May to July but is best known as the sign of remembrance in November. The use of the poppy was inspired by the World War I poem 'In Flanders Field' which refers to the poppies that grew in the churned up earth left by the trenches.
In folklore poppies represent sleep as well as death and staring into the centre of a poppy was said to be a cure for insomnia.
The seeds of the poppy are used for oil and also in baking. It is occasionally used as an expectorant to treat coughs and also to colour medicines.
Due to the unique nature of hand embroidery each pendant may vary very slightly from the image shown.
