These elusive, magical hares have always fascinated me although I have never been fortunate enough to see one - maybe that's what keeps them so special.

Full description
Mountain hares, lepus timidus are Britains only native hare and have been here since the Ice Age - unlike the brown hare and rabbit which are thought to have been introduced by the Romans.
Mountain hares change colour in winter, becoming white to camouflage them against the snow. They are often commonly known as blue hares as one of their summer colour forms is a bluish grey.
The Derbyshire Peak District saw the introduction of this beautiful yet elusive animal around the 1880's when it was introduced from Scotland to the Dark Peak area.
My mountain hare pot stand features a machine embroidered and needle felted hare on thick neutrally woven pure wool. The hare has been appliqued onto an organic linen background and is running up a heathery purple tweed landscape.
The pad measures approximately 24cm square, has been backed in heavy olive green cotton twill and has a ribbon hanging loop, it has not been padded, but could still be used to handle warm pans or plates or simply as a kitchen decoration - I use mine to open the door on my woodburning stove.
