My inspiration for this item was quite direct. I was inspired by some of the truly stunning huswifs I've seen online, and when I found the painted taffeta silk, I knew it had to be used to make something like this.
This huswif is a one of a kind item. I have no more of either the taffeta or the gold silk left, so even if I make more huswifs this one is unique.

A gorgeous, handmade "huswif", or "housewife", made from gold silk dupion and painted red/blue shot silk taffeta.
A huswif or housewife is a portable sewing book designed to carry a few essential items. The name originates from when men, going to war, would take a "housewife" with them to allow them to darn their own socks, sew their own buttons, and take care of other little things.
This huswif consists of a pocket for a small pair of scissors, a second pocket to carry a thimble or some stored thread, two sheets of aida fabric for storing pins and a little pincushion.
The colours in the taffeta really are spectacular and the pictures simply do not do justice to the crimson red shot through with a blue so deep it's almost black. The painted exterior is something special, too. Gold and a pale blue so shiny it looks silker in some lights. A truly luxurious item that would make a spectacular gift, paired with some vintage sewing scissors and a silver thimble.
