Life has rather caught up with me at the moment and there hasn’t been time to create as much as I’d like. I’m working on some new pieces at the moment and will post them as soon as they are available.

When I was a child I had a beautiful pet hen who followed me everywhere. My brother now keeps chickens in Skye and I still love the way they look so comfortable and self contained when sitting and pecking around that I wanted to make a little panel that captured these happy creatures.

About the suncatcher

A dark amber coloured hen against a background of diamond shaped patterns. She is hand made by me from bright pieces of coloured glass. The contrast between the dark paint and the coloured glass really comes alive with some sunlight. The hen and the borders are created by painting the glass all over then using sharp sticks to cut and scratch the patterns. The scratched glass paint is then kiln fired to keep everything permanent. The violet corners on this particular piece are difficult to show in the photograph but the top square on the main photograph is a good representation of the colour. The pieces are joined using soldered copper foil and there is a small copper wire loop for hanging. The glass I use often has interesting tiny bubbles and ripples that create textures and these are part of the nature of the glass. Because the piece is handmade, every one is unique.

Size

Overall size 10cm x 10cm approximately 4mm thick

The hen is 7cm x 7cm

Further information

The soldering is lead and therefore the piece is for decoration only and should not be placed where young children may handle or play with it.

Although at the moment the joins are shiny, these will develop a darker patina over time and give the piece a more ancient appearance.
