I love practical things. As much as the artist in me admires things of beauty, I am always especially interested in things that combine both functionality and art. When I found the lamp inserts in a craft catalogue I was over the moon and I knew my fathers wood-turning skills could be put to good use in shaping a beautiful piece of purple heart wood into something special.

Full description
This little oil lamp measures approximately 6 inches high and is 5 inches across at he widest point.
The oil lamp and glass funnel are sat in a turned wooden base, which can easily be removed for cleaning.
Purple Heart is a naturally coloured timber and the intensity of colour will change over time, depending on the light conditions where it is kept. It is a beautifully smooth and lightly grained piece of wood.

Some words of caution:
As with all real flame lamps and candles, this should never be left unattended when lit and placed away from fabrics such as curtains.
As a natural product, it requires a little care to keep in in good condition. Wood will expand and contract depending on the temperature and humidity of the surroundings. Wooden items should ideally be kept somewhere dry and with a constant temperature as much as possible. For instance, if it is placed near a radiator that heats up rapidly and then cools down, the wood is likely to warp.
