The Sunshine Quilt

This quilt got its name as the small coloured squares remind me of the morning sunshine coming through the window on a summer’s day! I have used a thick calico and a waxed cotton fabric with an African print in a blue and orange design and I think they work really nicely together. The back is a simple plain calico and I have lined the edges with the coloured fabric, hand finishing for a professional touch. The wadding used is 4 oz, which makes this a nice thick quilt. The squares have been hand pieced and machined together and I have machine quilted along the seams using the traditional ‘in the ditch’ style. The quilt is made for a double bed, although it looks equally as a good as a topper on a king sized bed or sumptuously draped over a single! We have similar one we use outside in autumn evenings or snuggle under on the sofa.

This quilt is made to be loved and used. It can be washed at 40 degrees centigrade, line dry or low tumble dry. You can also run a warm iron over it if you wish. I have washed this quilt once to start the quilting process.

I was born and brought up in Africa and love the bold batik designs - they take me back to my childhood but I think they also work very well in a modern European household, adding a touch of sunshine, especially during the winter months! I like to think of the quilt as a fusion of cultures as I think the design originates from Ireland.
