I was looking for something different to paint, and saw a bag of slate in a local store, and thought 'perfect!'. I love slate anyway, and when I saw these pieces, I thought they would be ideal for making hand painted fridge magnets, key rings, and pendants. I am even considering making earrings with some of the smaller pieces. Each piece I paint is different, and the slate kind of 'talks' to me when I pick it up. So, I might intend painting one thing, but when I pick up the piece to paint it, I just go with the flow and paint what it 'tells' me to!!

Full description
Hand-crafted, hand-painted slate fridge magnet with a silver stripey design. Painted with silver acrylic metallic paint. Approximate size - 1 x 1 (one inch by one inch).
I make these hand painted slate items by first washing the slate, sanding it down to ensure there are no rough edges, drilling a hole through the slate (for pendants & keyrings), scrubbing it clean again, then painting it with acylic paint (I use Inscribe bottled paint which I think is now called Palmer), and finally applying one or two coats of a satin acrylic varnish. Then for fridge magnets I attach one or two magnets to the reverse, and for keyrings I put a split ring through to act as the keyring.
There is quite a lot of work involved in getting the slate to the stage where I can paint it, but I think it is worth it as I love to paint on slate, and these hand painted slate items make terrific gifts.
