'Peonies'
Stunning cushion made from a vintage wedding kimono fabric printed with a bright vermillion, pink and red design of a traditional Japanese cart overflowing with peonies (a symbol of luck in love) and other flowers. Some of the petal edges have been hand embroidered with gold thread. White fabric from the same kimono is on the reverse of the cushion. Please note, there are a few permanent creases which are to be expected with this age and type of fabric.
This unique cushion has been made from a piece of cloth taken from a rare and genuine japanese wedding kimono worn by a young bride dating from the 1980's. The kimono has been carefully unpicked and I have chosen particular details in the cloth and cropped the fabric accordingly to look good as a cushion. The fabric originates from the Niigata region in Japan which has been a main producer of kimono silk for over one hundred years.
I love kimonos and am fascinated by the fact that a whole kimono is constructed from just one roll of fabric called a silk bolt or 'tanmono'. It is an exact length and width and nothing gets wasted. This in turn denotes the finished size of my cushions!
I hope you can display and enjoy this cushion as if a beautiful work of art or sculpture. Much of the cloth I use is hand embroidered or hand -printed and I think this is a wonderful way of preserving such an ancient and revered craft.
