WHAT IS PMC?
Precious Metal Clay, or PMC for short, is a unique medium invented by Mitsubishi where miniscule particles of pure silver are suspended in an organic binder to create a clay like material. This clay can be shaped, cut and stamped like normal clay. The artist designs their piece using the clay and specialist tools, the piece is then dried thoroughly and fired in a kiln at temperatures of between 700 and 900 degrees centigrade. The firing burns away the organic binder and compacts the silver particles. The piece is then brushed, burnished and polished to achieve the desired finish. The finished product is a 99.9% pure silver piece of art.
Unlike .925 sterling silver, which has added alloys such as copper, .999 fine silver is almost pure silver therefore should not cause any irritation to sensitive skin or tarnish in the same way as sterling silver.
