Full description

This is a carving mallet turned from some apple wood I purchased from a local auction, the tree was grown locally and cut as part of on-going orchard management.

Fruit woods have traditionally been used to make mallets from, as well as other tough hard woods.

This mallet is made from one piece of wood and is approximately 215mm (8 ½”) tall, 75mm (3”) diameter head and 30mm (1 ¼”) handle. The handle is approximately 110mm (4 ¼”) long with the end widening to 35mm in diameter. The head is 110mm (4 ¼”) long and has a slight concave across its length which I find makes the mallet slightly easier to use and place the blows on the chisel, the head also tapers slightly inwards towards the handle. The overall weight of the mallet is 400g (slightly under a pound)

When turning the mallet I notice a few woodworm holes in the wood, I have treated the whole piece for woodworm and I don’t think that when the mallet is used this will affect its performance or looks.

The piece is finished with a couple of coats of linseed oil.

If you think that the handle might be too chunk for your hands then let me know what diameter you would like and I can turn another one suited to your needs.

There is one condition of sale – Anything you carve using this mallet you must send me a picture!
