I've heard it described as a nursery rhyme, but I always understood it as a folk method of prediction based on the number of magpies seen after asking your question. I've seen several variations of the theme but I stuck to the the words I used as a child as I can verify they work. I hear in America they count crows, instead of maggie's pies.

Size: Printed by me on acid free, smooth, heavy weight cartridge paper A3 size is 420 x 297 mm (16.5 x 11.7 in) Fits standard sized frames (frames are not provided)

Materials: I use water based (eco friendly) acrylic inks darkest prussian blue, black and fairy toadstool red to create a stylish text artprint. All materials are archival to last as an heirloom into the future.

Important stuff: My screenprints are hand printed and hand registered by eye and unlike computer generated images are subject to slight variations that make each a unique piece of art.

Inspiration: Growing up I used this rhyme on the school playing fields to predict the sex of the next addition to our family- though the answer the was always the same as my mother never bothered to have another girl after me (possibly because she couldn't top the pinnacle of female excellence she has achieved on conceiving me). Anyway, in my family we adore magpies (or maybe we are very superstitious?) , and make sure we salute solitary ones.

Process: I used a variety of jolly circus fonts, and adorned it with two lovely magpies (I hand painted these in the screen using rubbings for the textures) to keep things lucky. A wondersome dose of childhood for your wall.

Good for a nursery or a pregnant friend- but then, a friend of mine has one in her hallway and it looks very smart there too. It's lucky wherever you put it. Frame it for a wall; post it to a friend; pop it in a (giant) scrapbook. Don't forget to see my other bird products, like The Reassuring Raven.
