This cushion uses a stunning rich brick red silk kimono fabric printed with oyster coloured migrating birds. The back of the cushion is also vintage kimono silk in a pale misty grey-green colour with a 'marshes' design woven into the fabric.
I love kimonos and am fascinated by the fact that a whole kimono is constructed from just one roll of fabric called a silk bolt or 'tanmono'. It is an exact length and width and nothing gets wasted. This in turn denotes the finished size of my cushions!
This unique cushion has been made from a piece of cloth taken from a rare and genuine japanese kimono worn by a woman dating from the 1960's. The kimono has been carefully unpicked and I have chosen particular details in the cloth and cropped the fabric accordingly to look good as a cushion. The fabric originates from the Niigata region in Japan which has been a main producer of kimono silk for over one hundred years.
I hope you can display and enjoy this cushion as if a beautiful work of art or sculpture. Much of the cloth I use is hand embroidered or hand -painted and I think this is a wonderful way of preserving such an ancient and revered craft.
