Full description
Each one of my Icarus sculptures is a unique study in clay, capturing the moment Icarus spreads his wings to prepare to take to the air.
Held captive on King Minos' island, Icarus and his father's only means of escape is to fly to freedom. On wings constructed of feathers and wax they take off - but giddy with the joy of flying, Icarus flies up too high to the sun. The wax on his wings melts, his feathers fall to the waves below, as does Icarus, and he drowns.
I have made a few studies of Icarus, every one with a different expression and decoration on his neck band and wings. They are mounted on a block of (very local) Doulting sandstone with a strong steel rod.
Constructed from black stoneware clay, painted over with layers of porcelain slip and decorated with incised marks, once fired they are painted with brown underglaze to pick out the highlighted details. I then finish each piece with an application of gold coloured metal leaf to accentuate his neck band and feathers, giving the impression of flashes of reflected gold sunlight.
