What a lovely and striking piece of wood this is! This vase has been hand turned and I have left some of the distinctive white bark of the tree around the rim. The shape was chosen to display the spalting (the black lines that run through the wood) as much as possible.
This would make a beautiful and unique display piece. It can be used on it's own, with dried or silk flowers, or even with fresh flowers should a liner be used. The wood has been treated to make it water resistant, however it should not be soaked. The vase has been turned with a very thick wall at the bottom to improve stability. It should be quite practical and not at all prone to toppling if a tall item is displayed in it.

Silver birch is native to northern Europe and is noteworthy for its white, silvery bark. Spalting, as seen in this piece, occurs after a tree has been cut and left without being immediately dried. It is caused by fungus and leads to the white patches of wood and dark lines that follow the grain.
The wood used in this item comes from my farm. The tree was felled due to road expansion work. A real shame, but at least the wood has gone to a good use.
