Full description
First I spun each fibre (comercially combed tops), then plied them together it on my little Haldane Hebridean wheel.
This is hand spun yarn and I've not even tried to keep the same size thoroughout, so you'll get thick and thin (ish) bits - it's the way I like it and I hope you do too. I can buy yarn with a standard thickness in the shops, but I like the rustic homemade feel of this yarn.
A word about silk...
Did you know that the silkworm is boiled alive once it has spun the cocoon?
The Bombyx moth has been kept in captivity for thousands of years and unfortunately has "elvoved" to be COMPLETELY dependant on man. Those that are allowed to emerge are blind, unable to feed and incapable of flight. Their life as a moth is shortlived.
However, if you keep an eye out for TUSSAH silk you will be using a more humane version.
All the moths are allowed to emerge from their cocoons in this production method. As the moth secretes an enzyme to break down the silk to get out (this is the point standard production needs to avoid, hence the boiling alive) the thread becomes a golden colour rather than white, and this makes it of a lower class.
Silk is silk - does it really matter whether it's crystal white?
