Title: Incandescent Dom
Description: Visitors to Cologne are greeted with views of the Cathedral (Kölner Dom) from everywhere in the city. This gothic masterpiece, lurks amongst the city streets and public buildings, waiting to pounce upon your senses. The impact of the Dom comes from its dominance of the environment in which it stands and from the contrast between its ancient stonework and visibly modern surroundings. This uneasy relationship exaggerates the sense of scale and splendour and reinforces UNESCO’s description of the Dom as an "exceptional work of human creative genius".
