pdf pattern for a Hap Shawl by Elizabeth Lovick
in ColourMart DK Cashmere
copyright Elizabeth Lovick 2006
‘Hap’ (meaning to wrap up for warmth) was the name given to the shawls knitted and worn in the Northern and Western Islands of Scotland in the Nineteenth Century. They are based on garter stitch, so are very stretchy, and are therefore ideal for both babies and adults.
Things you need to know to make the shawl:
Materials
3 x 150 g cones ColourMart DK yarn
about 15 g each of three contrast colours if desired
pair 4.5 mm (US 7) needles,
4.5 and 5 mm (US 7 and 8) circular needles
row counter, 8 stitch markers
stitch holders or lengths of yarn
contrast waste yarn
Photo uses 50% cashmere 50% merino DK yarn in lilac. Note that the centre takes just under one cone, the border one cone and the edging just under one cone.
Size
about 49 ins square when blocked slightly stretched.
Instructions are given at the end of the pattern for changing both the size of the shawl and the weight of the yarn
The Small Print!
Once I have received your payment I will send the pattern as a pdf attachment to an email. The file size is 1 MB so your inbox must be big enough to take a file of that size. All sales are final.
Please remember that this pattern is copyright, and you cannot use the pattern to make garments for sale without my permission. Thank you.
