Ceramic Shard The River Tees Barnard Castle Co Durham September 2026 Handcrafted into Pendant October 2026 I love collecting anything broken, lost or found by chance. A small patch of ground beside the River Tees often gets boggy and drenched during heavy rains. The downpours expose all sorts of broken pot, glass, bits of pipes and wonderful oyster shells. I found a lovely piece of ceramic, with dark blue leaf pattern, almost missed it hidden in the grass. Usually I either use the shape of the piece found or drop it randomly to create shards. This dictates the possibilities of what the ceramic might become. However, I was drawn to the pattern of two branches/leaves and experimented sanding around them to see what might form. I used thin recycled wooden sanding dowels to follow the pattern. This pendant is the result, one of a kind, imperfect, found and created by chance, unique moment in time. Front glaze mostly in tact with slight scratching and tiny manufacturing imperfection glaze dot. Back and sides smoothed and sealed with Eco Friendly Matt Sealant. The idea is to create something new from old. The finished piece isn't meant to be perfect but instead retain part of the original character, including marks and scratches, all part of the history of the shard found. Shard approximately 27 mm x 28 mm x 4 mm (widest). Hanging on 45 cm Recycled Sterling Silver Highly Polished Snake Chain. Delivered in gift box made from FSC®-certified cardboard and water-based glue. Presented on Jewellery box insert made from tall oil, a by-product of paper production.
