Ceramic Shard The River Tees Barnard Castle Co Durham September 2026 Handcrafted into Decoration October 2026 I love collecting anything broken, lost or found by chance. A small patch of ground beside the River Tees often gets boggy and drenched during heavy rains. The downpours expose all sorts of broken pot, glass, bits of pipes and wonderful oyster shells. I found a lovely striking piece of ceramic, distinctive Blue Willow Pattern. Gorgeous blues, part of a rim with the pattern dipping down onto the centre of a plate. After a thorough clean I decided to drill a hole into the plain white ceramic but sadly dropped the shard while doing so. However, this type of accident often brings a better idea, so I clipped off the rough edges, drilled a hole into the pattern and used the white line that runs around the pattern as a guide. This created a scalene triangle with one edge rounded. Hand polished/buffed using recycled fabric the original glaze has come back to life, full of shine. The sides and back smoothed and sealed with Eco Friendly matt sealant. The idea is to create something new from old. The finished piece isn't meant to be perfect but instead retain part of the original character, including marks and scratches, all part of the history of the shard found. Measures approximately 36 mm x 30 mm x 50cm scalene triangle, 4 mm thick. Hanging on 44 cm thread though woven black cord with clasp to wear as necklace and includes recycled black ribbon & string as alternative hanging style for decoration. Delivered in gift box made from FSC®-certified cardboard and water-based glue. Presented on Jewellery box insert made from tall oil, a by-product of paper production. Sustainable gifts, complete with short bio and gift bag.
