I painted a lone, wind-leaning tree rising from the fens at the edge of my village at first light, its dark, expressive branches set against a sky that slowly warms from cool violets and blues into soft golds and yellows. I was drawn to the moment just before full sunrise, when the land still holds the night's shadows but the promise of day is unmistakable. The loose, layered brushwork in the grasses and water allows colours to bleed and mingle, suggesting movement, reflection, and the quiet breath of the landscape waking. The tree, angled yet enduring, becomes a symbol of persistence—rooted, weathered, but still reaching toward the light.
