Welcome to Ruth Readman Ceramics, where the art of hand-built ceramics comes to life. Graduating from Bath Spa University in 2005 having studied 3D Design: Ceramics, I've since devoted myself to making exquisite ceramic pieces that embody the essence of the Dorset landscapes.
The rugged beauty of the Jurassic Coast in Dorset serves as a never ending source of inspiration for my work. Stories, childhood memories, and the vivid landscapes infuse themselves into each creation, fostering a unique connection between my pieces and the surrounding environment.
Specialising in hand-built ceramics, I make both functional and decorative pieces. My pieces reflect a balance between delicate aesthetics and design. The stoneware tableware embodies classic, well-proportioned forms accentuated by subtle glazes or layers of slip, while the Raku bowls exude fragility with their fractured edges and the unique glazes. Where as the larger vessels are devoted to exploring texture through surface application. My work invites interaction and joy in every touch.
The slow, methodical approach to making, akin to meditation, is at the core of my practice. I push the boundaries of clay, demonstrating that hand-building doesn't equate to bulkiness. All my work is made from a smooth terracotta crank clay, a conscious choice aimed at minimizing wastage.
