Hand turned from green wood, Held Open is a one-of-a-kind sculptural vessel that celebrates the natural movement of timber as it dries. A distinctive end-grain insert in the base reveals the tree's growth rings, creating a subtle reminder of its origins.
I turned the vessel while the sycamore still contained its natural moisture. As it dried, the wood moved gently and developed its own distinctive form. Rather than forcing the timber into a perfect shape, I allowed it to express its natural character.
The simple form and fine walls draw attention to one carefully considered detail. An end-grain fire tree insert in the base reveals a tree's annual growth rings. As a result, the base becomes an important part of the piece, rewarding closer inspection and offering a quiet connection to the tree.
Every piece of timber has its own character. For that reason, I celebrate natural features such as grain variation, gentle movement and individual markings. Consequently, no two vessels can ever be the same.
