Hello, I’m Liz, the woodturner behind Love Heartwood.
I discovered woodturning completely by accident in 2008 while studying Product Design at Central Saint Martins. A project to design a table for Liberty introduced me to the lathe, and it sparked an obsession that has never left me. I bought my first lathe in 2012, taught myself to turn and began Love Heartwood the following year.
Today, my workshop is on at Amners Farm in the West Berkshire countryside near Reading. I make small batches of functional wooden homeware, including bowls, platters, vases and candlesticks, alongside traditional wooden toys, gifts, Christmas decorations and one-of-a-kind commissioned pieces. I also create sculptural work that explores how green wood moves and changes as it dries.
I love working with locally sourced British wood and allowing its grain, colour, knots and natural quirks to guide what each piece becomes. Everything is turned and finished by me, so no two pieces will ever be quite the same.
Away from the lathe, I juggle running my business with family life as mum to three sons. Music is another big part of my life: I love singing and can often be found playing my ukulele—although perhaps not while I’m turning!
