About The Skiving Scholar

The Skiving Scholar

Artist using recycled silver to create handmade one of a kind pieces

The name ‘Skiving Scholar’, with its jellyfish logo, is a tongue-in-cheek reference to the fact that I am a trained Marine Biologist & Oceanographer who also likes to ‘skive off’ work occasionally to make beautiful things. So from 9am to 5pm I work towards a vision for clean, healthy, productive and biologically diverse oceans and seas, this is also the inspiration for quite a lot of the things I make. After hours I get to work with this beautiful pure silver.

I am one of those people that cannot stop making things with my hands, I actually work in a variety of mediums including metal clay, photography, lino printing, drawing and renovating or upcycling old furniture. I feel a responsibility and passion to recycle objects and materials as much as possible in my day to day life. I came to find out about Silver clay because its such a clever medium, created from recycling precious metals by a company with a strong Eco friendly mission that is fully focused on their social responsibilty, its not everday that that happens.

The Silver clay is pliable and can be transformed into pure silver when fired at high temparature with a kiln, the end result is 99.9% pure Fine silver handcrafted jewellery brought to you by The Skiving Scholar. I am completly drawn to its modelling abilities, you can create any expression with it, in free-form, and have it become a one of a kind piece so the possibilities are endless, it is narrowing down the ideas that is the tricky part!
