About Muddy House Folk

Muddy House Folk

Dyers and makers based in a small garden studio in the Brecon Beacons

Nestled in a sheltered corner of the Brecon Beacons, near the village of Myddfai, is the Muddy House. Surrounded by fields, hills and hedgerows, and a beautiful garden, we grow plants, for picking, cutting, chopping and putting in our dye pots. The Muddy House is our inspiration and home to the Muddy House Folk; Karen and Bethany.

From Karen:
My practice has taken a long and meandering path, through years of stitch, weave and exploration of techniques that always lead me back to nature. An MA in Contemporary Crafts took me to a disused quarry in North Wales where my practice developed into installation and woven sculpture as a way of responding and developing a relationship (albeit temporary) with the land.Since moving from London to the Muddy House, I have found a place that is timeless, that calms and restores and holds a rich and varied colour palette. Plants grow and thrive and tempt me to dye with them in my pot – the possibilities are endless.

From Bethany:
Growing up surrounded by fabric, yarns and sewing machines naturally meant that I followed my own creative path. Mine explored paper and printing and led to a BA in Graphic Arts at Winchester School of Art. I spent several years working in the publishing and design industry, but turned to textiles when my daughter was born, buying my first sewing machine and making many a toy bag, blanket and needle case. Our little family moved from London to Chippenham, Wiltshire so we could be closer to my parents in the Muddy House. My son was born here, and it’s from my small fancy shed in the garden that I continue my making.
