Greenwood working has been a skill I first learnt when I was 20 with the Bill Hogarth Memorial Apprenticeship Trust, a coppicing organisation based in Cumbria.
Since then I have practised and honed these skills such as pole lathe wood turning and drawknife carving with traditional tools.
Greenwood work is the winter coppicing of trees and working their timber unseasoned with the sap present, which is easier to carve with hand tools. The item can then be slowly seasoned with final adjustments and finishes applied once the timber has stabilised.
In the past I have worked for Natural England, National Trust and the RSPB. From this experience I have developed a wide knowledge of habitat management and estate work.
Traditional crafts often overlap this land management where in the past our ancestors in small cottage industries knew deeply their connection with the natural world and how materials could be sustainably resourced from this.
Small woodland coppicing is an iconic example of harvesting patches of woodland to create a mosaic of different aged vegetation that benefits plants, animals, invertebrates and fungi in an intricate ecosystem.
Recently I have graduated from Hereford College of Arts in Artist Blacksmithing.
This has augmented my skill set with forging hot steel and also designing sculptures.
I enjoy working with a variety of materials in mixed media.
This has allowed me to broaden the range of products available here in my Folksy shop.
