I became inspired by the Dartmoor myths surrounding the Foxglove or "Cowflop" as it is sometimes known in these parts! Research: I found this particular stem in a tin mine up on the moor and as I painted it, became entranced by the small spots and mottled appearance inside the throat of the flower. Weaving in local legend: A local person told me that these are known as Fairy Footprints. The painting itself seems to have a magical animation: as I was photographing it a gust of wind took hold of the board and sent it spinning in the air for a few seconds - as though fairy wings were trying to give it a lift off! A rough patch on the edge of the artwork bears witness to this attempt at flight. Bringing British nature into your home: This piece would look gorgeous hung in a space such as a stair landing where the viewer can imagine the moorland expanses where this beautiful flower grows.
