This artwork features the striking silhouette of a Tortoiseshell butterfly. Captured mid-flight, it's intricate wing patterns are layered over a rich, abstract background detailing one of the plants that it favours (the rose). Using a blend of vibrant acrylics and premium, lightfast oil paints, this piece adds a bold, joyful pop of colour to any room and makes an unforgettable gift for nature lovers. Art with a purpose: In recognition of the delicate beauty of butterflies and the importance of protecting their habitats a percentage of the proceeds from this painting's sale will be donated to Butterfly Conservation, supporting the protection and recovery of butterflies and moths. "The Tortoiseshell" is a one-of-a-kind original, created for someone who appreciates art with a story, a connection to the natural world and a purpose beyond the canvas. Inspired by the familiar and beautiful tortoiseshell butterfly I have overlaid its shape over the image of a rose,( a frequent haunt of this butterfly) that I spotted this year in Isparta, Turkey. The painting is made using good quality acrylic paints on canvas and comes ready framed and ready to hang.

This year I visited the rose capital of Turkey: Isparta; a place renowned for growing roses and providing the rest of the world with the essence of this beautiful flower. On our return, the first thing I saw was a beautiful tortoiseshell butterfy delicately resting on the Madame Carrier rose that my mother had given me shortly before she passed away. These butterflies are incredibly resilient (sometimes resisting temperatures as low as -21 degrees celsius. I like to think that this resilience comes out in the painting and might even aspire the person who buys or gifts the picture to become stronger in the manner of these impressive insects! In this painting, I also wanted to connect the two experiences mentioned above by overlaying the image of the butterfly over that of the rose.
