In the very early morning when I am digging in my tiny allotment behind our garden a Robin frequently joins me waiting for the worms I am turning up to take to her nest. I have knitted several Robins but observing her inspired me to set about trying to create a robin reflected her movements shape and colouring.

Full description

There are lots of great cute robin patterns but I wanted a robin that really looks like a robin. It has taken a while, but I hope you like my effort.

Robin is made from 4 shades of Jamieson’s Shetland Spindrift (see below) carefully selected to match the true colours. The body and tail are knitted in one piece in stocking stitch with increase and decrease shaping. Wings are made separately and stitched on before gently felting. Instructions are given to make knitted feet which are recommended if he is given to a child. Instructions are also given to make legs from pipe cleaners which enable him to stand.

The seam along the back of the body is stitched using a mixture of mattress stitch and fake grafting to give a really good finish. The bird is softly felted a little in the washing machine on a short cycle to give a soft fluffed up texture and blur the edges of each shade.
