A few yrs ago, to celebrate 50 yrs of Helvetica, I designed a winter card using the iconic Helvetica asterix as falling snowflakes. Here, I've recreated & adapted that idea using 19th century, metal-movable-type stars ranging in size from 6pt to 36pt. Anyone who has dabbled in typesetting will know how challenging it can be, at the best of times, to assemble letterforms, spacers & leading into a grid, to perfect a layout. My challenge was to simultaneously achieve, symmetry & asymmetry in this design. My deliberate intention, in order to represent the randomness of falling snow whilst considering symmetrical geometry of individual snowflakes. Take a good look & you can see it (& other things if you keep looking) It took 2 days Typesetting to make it work.. The problem was to get every element to hold tight in the chase so, without compromising the idea, I was able to print it…
