Fil Au Chinois makes its threads in Northern France, in Lille.
The name comes from a time when everything from China was exotic, fascinating and beautiful, the material does not come from China.
I love to use this thread for bindings with an exposed binding, especially Coptic bindings where I can show off the many beautiful colours this thread comes in.

Full description
This listing is for a 50g spool of Fil Au Chinois Lin Cable No. 432, a French coloured linen thread. Many regard the lin cable as THE best thread for leather sewing.
The cabling (which essentially means the thread has been twisted twice) makes the thread especially strong and round. The thread is waxed before cording which gives it a pleasant sheen and smooth finish without rendering it sticky.
The No. 432 has a diameter of approximately 0.63mm and the spool has an estimated 200m of thread.
This thread is especially made and sold as a leather sewing thread but can be used everywhere where a strong thread is desired, such as for puppets on a string, or jewelry making. It can also be used for bookbinding (although I would not recommend it for restoration projects, as the thread is very strong, and old paper is weak). I do not recommend it to novice bookbinders because it is considerably harder to use than other threads due to being highly twisted.
