The Way to Blue

Enchanting Cyanotypes

Sarah’s bird’s eye view with the butterflies is a joyful celebration of nature. Influenced by her love of the British countryside from her Shropshire roots growing up in a house nestled in the forest, time spent living close to nature in a caravan by a fisherman's cottage, a year absorbing the wild beauty of Anglesey’s coastline to now - the beautiful Conwy valley in North Wales. On the edge of Snowdonia her visual playground is now mountainous and coastal where her imagination and creativity are free to run wild.

Sarah’s most recent works are created using the old photographic process of Cyanotype invented by Sir John Herschel in 1841. A light sensitive solution is applied to various papers, objects or negatives layered on then exposed to sunlight, the solution is then rinsed off and the paper dried, fixing the image in glorious blue tones.

“As an artist I have always been drawn to the colour blue and its
associations with nature and the infinite. I have also strived to
capture light in my work so upon discovering the Cyanotype
technique I was hooked by its many possibilities”

Sarah uses this technique to capture our delight and wonder in the intricacies and uniqueness of nature. The freedom of the great
outdoors are all encapsulated in her work whether it be in delicately textured candle holders enhanced as light flickers through the cyanotype or enchanting images of faraway forests, butterfly meadows and seascapes imbued with magic and charm.
