Zero-waste textile accessories

Originally from Belfast and based in Newcastle upon Tyne, I work on quite a lot of things including podcasting, writing, foraging and making things. Much of my making using textiles involves using stuff up and avoiding waste. Since childhood I have hated waste and I have become increasingly environmentally conscious throughout life. Most of the materials I use are discarded by others as waste, mainly off-cuts from their own projects or old clothes. I started playing with 'crazy' patchworks as a way of recycling discarded scraps and have come to use the technique to make panels suitable for the sides of tote bags. Each design is unique and involves free-machine embroidery to get everything closed up and strengthened. It makes for fascinating patterns, plus it helps me stay focused and calm at times of heightened stress - a win-win.
