I hope you like my work, I'm a designer and potter working in Kent and you'll see that I have a particular interest in ceramics with Labradors and retrievers (actually most animals and country matters)! All of my work, from the smallest cup to the largest platter is an entirely hand made and illustrated one-off. I throw much of my work on the potter's wheel and then illustrate with ceramic slips and glazes before firing in my kiln to create impervious ceramics. Simon Olley threw his first pot aged 9. He now designs and makes ceramics from his home studio in Kent, England. He makes and sells his work through open studio events, craft shows and to private customers as well as online.
Simon throws unique one-off ceramic designs on his pottery wheel using a variety of earthenware, stoneware and porcelain clays. He then decorates the clay, usually at leather hard stage (damp but not soft), with a combination of slips, oxides and glazes. He may scratch into the surface with a range of small tools – a technique called sgraffito and he then fires the work in his kiln at temperatures between 1100 and 1300 degrees centigrade. The result is original, impervious works of craftsmanship – heirlooms that could last for thousands of years.
