Textile Artist making faux taxidermy bird soft sculptures from vintage and reclaimed materials.

I am a self taught textile artist working from my home studio in South Sheffield, not too far away from the beautiful Derbyshire Peak District. I work with reclaimed and vintage material and my main focus is soft sculpture birds.

Birds have always intrigued me….their journey from breaking out of their egg, starving and featherless, reliant on their parents, to fledging from the safety of their nest into the unknown, braving predators to finally being independent.

Their beauty is a joy to recreate in textiles, selecting the right colours and textures and is definitely one of my favourite parts of my making process.

Reclaimed fabric appeals to me, because as well as the obvious environmental benefits of not buying new, it has a history and so much more personality, be it a stained, yellowing vintage tablecloth with damaged lace edging, a bejewelled evening dress or a pair of heavy velvet curtains that have nested for years in an attic.

Each piece takes many hours to make and is unique due to the nature of the materials used. I make similar birds, but no two are ever exactly the same. Each has its own personality.
