Hi, thank you for visiting my shop.

I’m Andrea Britnell, wife to Simon, mother to Adam and Fern and owned by Oakley the Corgi.

Creativity has always been a part of my life, starting with Art and Pottery ‘O’ Levels, then a BTEC National Diploma in Display Design. It was a fantastic 2 year course at The College for the Distributive Trades in Charing Cross, London. Unfortunately it no longer exists but we covered many subjects: photography, prop making, graphic and interior design, life drawing (which I was particularly bad at) and a bunch of academic stuff. I was probably one of the few that went on to be a display designer (window dresser) which turned out to be one of the lowest paid artistic occupations there is and has become, virtually extinct.
My first job was at the iconic Hanningtons Department Store in Brighton with its 50 windows and displays, then Allders International, and then, (where I met my husband) Spoils Kitchen Reject Shop (no, really). All of these businesses have since closed down so I feel slightly cursed.
A short career break to have children turned into a longer one after my daughter was born. She has a rare, genetic blood disorder which required regular blood transfusions and caused a host of other complications. Having a sick child really channels your attention.
After nearly a decade I became a teaching assistant at my daughter’s school. It is a wonderful job, especially if you are artistic. So many opportunities to create, whether that be wall displays, props for the school play and encouraging the children to learn and express themselves.
Skipping forward another decade, past some of life’s problems and family loss, I’ve found myself back to being a ‘homemaker’, actually I call it a family facilitator, realising that my role helping the family with their lives makes us all a lot happier.
But with that came the opportunity to create - just for me. So firstly, I finished and self published a sci-fi novel - I’ve sold about 20 books. And then in 2023 I found mosaic. I think I love mosaic because it’s kind of a blend of 2 and 3D art. It feels more like construction than illustration. I like the tactile nature, the skill it takes to cut, the puzzle factor and the challenge of creating something natural and detailed with something unyielding and man made. Like many, I’m self taught with the help of online videos and a lot of experimentation. My influences are many but primarily the natural world and the woodlands and meadows near my home. I am also particularly drawn to the Arts and Crafts Movement. I admire their philosophy of beauty and functionality, craftsmanship, the gentle colour palette and their patterns with nature themes.
My other influence is interiors. I want my art to nestle in with a modern cottage aesthetic or something more contemporary and I often take colour cues from fabric designs or wallpaper. Going forward, I am focusing on creating artwork that ties in with a room’s design elements or to soft furnishings, helping to bring an interior scheme together or perhaps inspire one.
With that said, I am always open to commissions as I enjoy the challenge of working to a brief or finding a theme, just drop me a line.
