Being a MAKER is the he BEST job in the world!

Inspiration can be found in the simplest of places, it is all around us.
I have lived in and around Totnes in South Devon for over 20 years. My studio is close to many lovely overgrown footpaths and hidden lanes. It is here I find the inspiration for my design work especially when out walking the dog. I am drawn every day to the almost geometric, repetitive patterns in nature. From seed heads of a wild poppy to the fractal patterns as a fern uncurls. I bring these treasures home and start replicating the patterns in soft veg tan leathers. Combining punches, mark making and metal studs I create decorative patterns to embellish the simples shapes of a small range of purses, pouches and bags. Touches of gold leather bring a little luxury to this new range.
Study & career
I studied textiles and fashion at Nottingham Trent University specialising in Free machine embroidery. I went on to set up Vicky King Embroidery – selling a range of embroidered designs and undertaking commisions. I exhibited at the London Trade show Top Drawer, selling to 100+ Galleries and shops.
Vixen Designs
I had been exploring my options of returning to making but wanted to move my practice forward into new areas and learn new skills. A piece of local deerskin hide re-ignited my creative career and began my journey into leatherwork. I am drawn to the mathematical and practical side of pattern making, creating 3D shapes from 2D leather. I enjoy the challenge of manipulating a flat surface to bring it to life and give it a practical, long-lasting use.
I founded Vixen Designs in 2018. It is wonderful to have rediscovered my creativity after a break to raise a family and enjoy spending time in my studio every day immersed in designing and making a range of decorative and functional leather goods. Each season I focus on a limited palette of colours creating a limited number of each design. I will be selling online, to local galleries and at Ashburton Makers.
